What is the difference between 10k, 14k and 18k Gold?

The "k" stands for karat, which is the amount of gold present in the material. 10k being the lowest (most durable) and 18k being the most used in jewelry making. 24k is considered to be 100% solid gold, however solid gold is soft, and not suitable for jewelry.
